Anticompetitive Action Suit Filed By Fortnite Developer against Samsung
Samsung and Google use an app blocking feature called Auto Blocker, and Epic Games is calling them out in a lawsuit claiming anticompetitive behavior.
There was another lawsuit of this nature back in 202 that targeted Google for monopolistic actions, and it too was filed by Epic Games who won the case. Now, the developers of Fortnite, Epic Games, are suing Samsung and Google both for their Auto Blocker feature. Epic Games says that this feature is anticompetitive, although Samsung claims it is designed to block the installation of apps that are not registered or approved by the company.
Samsung says this feature is good at protecting the data and devices of its customers. Epic Games says the feature is too restrictive and keeps out any content that does not come from the Google Play Store.
Anyone who wants to access any apps that are outside the store will have to go through a 21-step process, claims Epic Games. This does not keep the playing field level, they accuse, and it keeps third party stores from ever receiving Samsung’s approval and authorization. Epic Games also recalled the 2020 court case and said that this case was supposed to fix the issue and prevent these kinds of practices.
Google Fires Back
Google said in a statement about the lawsuit that this is not an issue of game access. Instead, they say, it is about user safety. They are trying to protect their clients. The head of security of Google, David Kleidermacher, said on social media that the lawsuit is a dangerous move on the part of Epic Games and is completely without merit.
Google has further stated that the lawsuit is a way for Epic Games to elevate their personal business interests above the safety and protection of consumers. Epic Games responded by saying that the 2020 case decision was supposed to put a stop to OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) that illegally prevent competition.
