Vitalik Buterin Wants Web3 to Take Privacy Seriously—Here’s Why That Matters
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is speaking out about something he thinks Web3 developers urgently need to focus on: privacy.
In a recent blog post, he laid out his concerns about how easily personal data is collected, stored, and potentially misused—not just by big tech companies, but also by governments.
Buterin contends that it’s not always the case that “more transparency equals more fairness.” In fact, he believes it can backfire. Excessive amounts of data can be misused, whether through hacking, monitoring, or businesses that sell personal data. His remedy? Start by gathering as little information as you can.
He’s especially concerned about how powerful AI tools are becoming. As artificial intelligence gets better at analyzing large volumes of data, the potential for privacy violations grows. To fight back, Buterin is calling for Web3 developers to make stronger use of tools like zero-knowledge proofs and homomorphic encryption—basically, technologies that allow systems to verify or compute things without revealing all the data behind them.
Moreover, Buterin sees that the Ethereum ecosystem will be enhanced with more privacy-friendly features. Better privacy settings in cryptocurrency wallets, stealth wallet addresses, and protocols that make it more difficult to track or connect user activities could all result from this. The intention is to enable the usage of decentralized platforms and applications without endangering users’ identities or private information.
But this isn’t just about tech for Buterin—it’s about values. He sees privacy as a basic right, one that allows people to think, speak, and act freely without worrying about being constantly watched or judged. And as Web3 continues to grow, his message is clear: if we want this new internet to truly empower users, protecting privacy has to be part of the foundation.
