Tesla Stops Selling Model S, Model X in China
Tesla halted orders for Model S and Model X cars on its Chinese website as the world’s largest economies continue their trade war.
This decision follows China’s 84 percent tariffs on US goods in response to Donald Trump’s 145 percent tariffs on Chinese imports, and it was made without any explanation from the company. Americans manufacture the Model S and Model X automobiles imported into China.
According to Li Yanwei, an analyst with the China Automobile Dealers Association, China imported 311 and 1,553 units of these models in 2024, respectively.
The American electric vehicle giant has a strong presence in China, its largest global market.
The group manufactures other models, the Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, in the Shanghai commercial hub for sale in China and export to Europe. Of the 179 million cars delivered worldwide in 2024, almost 657,000 were purchased in the Middle Kingdom, accounting for over one-third of all sales.
This figure is impressive given that Elon Musk’s company did not see an increase in overall sales during the year.
The two flagship models that account for nearly all of this performance are the Tesla Model Y, which sold over 480,000 units in China in 2024, making it the best-selling all-electric vehicle in the country, and the Tesla Model 3, with about 177,000 units sold.
