Trump Pressures Fed: Accuses Powell of Playing Politics
Donald Trump is once again turning up the heat on the Federal Reserve, urging Chair Jerome Powell to cut interest rates immediately and accusing him of political bias.
“He could change his image—and do it quickly,” Trump said on Truth Social, suggesting Powell has been consistently behind the curve.
The former president’s comments come amid one of the worst global market sell-offs in recent memory. Trump argued that falling inflation, lower energy prices, and a resilient job market make this the “perfect time” for a rate cut. “Even egg prices are down 69%,” he noted, calling the situation “a big win for America.”
Political Accusations Amid Market Turmoil
Trump went further, accusing Powell of “playing politics” and warned that failure to act could damage the economy. His post adds to the growing debate over the Fed’s next move, as the central bank holds interest rates at elevated levels to combat inflation. While markets have priced in potential cuts later this year, the Fed has said it will wait for more consistent data before making a decision.
Trump’s criticism of Powell is not new. During his presidency, he repeatedly pushed for rate cuts and even considered removing Powell from his post. Now, with the 2024 election campaign underway, Trump is once again making monetary policy a centerpiece of his economic platform.
