Telegram Founder Leaves France For UAE
Pavel Durov, Telegram’s co-founder, left France and moved to UAE amid approval from a French court.
The French court permitted him to leave the country on March 13. He left for Dubai, a city renowned for its business-friendly atmosphere and lack of extradition agreements with numerous countries.
Although the specifics of the court’s ruling are still unknown, discussions concerning jurisdiction, privacy, and tech companies’ obligation to prevent unlawful activity on their platforms have been rekindled by Durov’s move.
Unverified reports indicate that Durov reached a settlement in France or has been granted permission to leave the country while the legal proceedings are still pending.
Durov had not confirmed his departure on social media, and the French government has not yet made a public statement, should the news be confirmed.
Telegram’s chief was unexpectedly taken into custody in August 2024 at Paris’s Le Bourget airport.
The Parquet de Paris, France’s prosecutor’s office, immediately filed preliminary charges against Durov in August. 28 alleging the founder of Telegram is responsible for enabling a platform that facilitates illegal transactions.
“He (Durov) departed France this morning,” according to AFP, which cited anonymous sources, adding that he did so with permission from the authorities. He had been permitted to leave France for “several weeks,” according to another source.
He was briefly detained at Paris’s Le Bourget airport in August, which marked the beginning of his legal troubles.
