Elon Musk Threatens U.S. Federal Workers With Resignation
The Trump administration sent emails to federal government workers threatening to terminate their employment unless they provided a detailed account of their work accomplishments from the previous week by Monday night.
Not answering the email request would be interpreted as a resignation, according to a post made on the social media platform X by Elon Musk, the billionaire who leads the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Musk wrote on X that “all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week.”. “An inability to reply will be interpreted as a resignation.
Musk’s post came just hours after President Donald Trump said on his social media platform, Truth Social, that DOGE should step up its efforts to restructure and reduce the country’s 21.3 million employees.
What did you do last week?” was the subject line of emails sent to employees of various federal agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, among others, as of Saturday evening.
Workers are asked to reply with five bullet points that summarize “what you accomplished at work last week,” they are also asked to copy their managers, according to the email that Reuters was able to view.
The Office of Personnel Management sent it from a human resources address, giving workers until 11:59 p.m. M. EST on Monday to reply. If federal employees do not comply with Musk’s request, it is unclear what legal grounds he has to fire them and what would happen to those who can’t disclose confidential work.
