Meme Coins = Crypto Mainstream? Coinbase CEO Says It’s Happening in 2025
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has weighed in on the growing influence of meme coins, emphasizing their potential role in mass crypto adoption.
In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) on Feb. 19, Armstrong acknowledged that while he is not an active meme coin trader, he recognizes their importance in the broader cryptocurrency landscape.

βI am personally not a memecoin trader (beyond a few test trades), but theyβve become hugely popular. Arguably, theyβve been with us since the beginning β Dogecoin is still one of the most popular coins. Even Bitcoin is somewhat of a memecoin (one could argue so is the U.S. dollar, once it was disconnected from gold),β Armstrong stated.
Why Meme Coins Matter in the Crypto Economy
Armstrong compared meme coins to early internet trends that initially seemed trivial but later evolved into significant movements. He noted that while some meme coins might appear βsilly, offensive, or even fraudulent today,β their potential should not be dismissed outright. Instead, he advocates for an open-minded approach, allowing the market to determine their value over time.
Coinbaseβs philosophy aligns with this perspective. Armstrong reiterated that the company operates on free-market principles, ensuring that customers have access to meme coins as long as they are legally compliant. However, he also issued a warning about risks associated with the meme coin space:
Scams & Fraudulent Tokens: Investors must exercise caution as the space is riddled with projects designed to deceive.
Insider Trading Risks: Armstrong stressed that illegal trading practices would lead to severe legal consequences.
Speculation vs. Long-Term Value: While meme coins create excitement, he cautioned against short-term, speculative trading that does not contribute to sustainable economic growth.

βMemecoins have a role to play here, and I think will evolve to help artists get paid, track trends, or who knows what β itβs too early to say, but we should keep exploring,β Armstrong said.
