Elon Musk: World’s Richest Man Not Buying TikTok
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man stated that he had no interest in buying TikTok, the well-known app for short videos that the US has been attempting to outlaw due to national security concerns with its Chinese owner, ByteDance.
Musk stated in a video posted online on Saturday by The WELT Group, a division of the German media firm Axel Springer, that he has not bid for TikTok and has no plans for what he would do if he did.
The Chinese-owned app, which has roughly 170 million monthly users in the United States, was scheduled to be banned because of national security concerns. President Donald Trump postponed the ban for 75 days, giving ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, a last-minute reprieve.
Several investors have openly expressed interest in ByteDance, but the company has stated that it has no plans to sell. MrBeast, a TikTok and YouTube influencer who goes by Jimmy Donaldson, announced in January that he planned to purchase the app. Kevin O’Leary, star of “Shark Tank,” and Frank McCourt, former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, are among the billionaires who indicated interest.
Musk paid $44 billion in 2022 to buy Twitter, which he has since rebranded as X.
However, Musk describes it as “very unusual” and states that he is not one to buy businesses. He claimed it was “important to preserve freedom of speech in America” to acquire Twitter, but he isn’t sure if the same reasoning holds for TikTok.
“I don’t buy things purely for financial gain.”. Aside from economics, I’m not sure why acquiring TikTok would be necessary,” he continued.
