Coinbase CEO Meets Trump as SEC and Treasury Picks Take Shape
Trump is moving fast to fill out his administration and the future of financial regulation is top of the list.
Yesterday he met with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, a sign that crypto and blockchain are getting more and more important to his economic vision for America. This was their first meeting since the election and fits with Trump’s focus on choosing officials who will shape the Treasury and the SEC.
Among the potential SEC Chair candidates are Hester Peirce, aka “Crypto Mom” for her pro-industry stance, and Robinhood’s Chief Legal Officer, Dan Gallagher. These are big signs that Trump is going to be a crypto innovator. And later this week he’ll be meeting at Mar-a-Lago to interview candidates for Treasury Secretary with Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh and billionaire Marc Rowan the top two contenders.
New Department and Crypto Regulation
As part of his administration-building, Trump has appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to co-head the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The department’s mission is to streamline government and use technology, which is a big sign that Trump is serious about innovation.
Trump’s newfound love of crypto goes beyond appointments. At the Bitcoin 2024 conference in July he announced a crypto industry presidential advisory council. This council will be made up of industry experts and supporters who will develop policies to grow and innovate blockchain and digital assets. He also reiterated his goal of making the U.S. the global leader in crypto and blockchain.
Key Figures and Crypto’s Future in America
Trump’s appointments come at a pivotal time for cryptocurrency. The industry is poised for significant regulatory shifts, and Trump’s selection of leaders like Brian Armstrong reflects his commitment to fostering innovation. His focus on crypto-friendly policies marks a stark departure from his previous skepticism.
