Discord’s Upcoming Integration With Ethereum a Step to NFTs?

Is Discord getting connected to the Ethereum blockchain? On Tuesday, the CEO and founder of the popular social network, Jason Citron, teased users with a screenshot hinting at a possible integration with the second most popular cryptocurrency ETH via MetaMask and WalletConnect.

The leading gaming chat platform looks like it will soon support crypto wallets. Citron shared the update in response to a strategic investor, Packy McCormick, calling Discord a Web3 sleeper despite being a highly engaging platform for online gamers.

While the news does sound exciting as far as the crypto community is concerned, as it could be another instance of mainstream adoption of the decentralized technology, several Discord users don’t seem too pleased out the possible development. Paid users of the platform worry that their subscriptions could fund scam-filled NFT ecosystems in the future, driving many to unsubscribe or consider unsubscribing from the premium service Nitro.

That Discord could be considering entering the NFT space is not entirely a brand new and unexpected development. Three months ago, the platform surveyed its users, gathering their inputs on NFTs, indicating interest in getting into one of the hottest trends in the crypto space this year. What’s interesting is that this survey closed earlier this week, shortly before Citron tweeted about the possible integration.

NFTs have been rising in popularity not only in the wider market but also in the gaming segment. Many popular P2E games on blockchains have started offering NFTs for monetization and it is possible that Discord will leverage an opportunity within this niche to stay on-trend. Ethereum is the largest platform supporting NFTs and NFT marketplaces, so it seems like a natural partnership if it does come out soon.
