Marvel Launching its First NFT Sale of Spider-Man Digital Collectibles
Marvel is getting into the NFT space, announcing the sale of its first Spider-Man crypto collectibles starting this weekend. The comics giant is partnering with VeVe to issue its first NFT, which includes five unique digital statues of the superhero.
The sale is part of VeVe’s “Marvel Month” celebration and is only the beginning of Marvel’s entry into the NFT market. The company also plans to launch an NFT of its first comic issue from 1939 soon. Comic book memorabilia will open up a whole new avenue of digital collectibles and drive more activity in the virtual marketplace.
According to reports, Marvel’s rival DC Comics is also planning to launch its own NFTs, although the timing of its launch is yet to be confirmed. The oldest comic book publisher in the US had issued a letter to freelancers back in mid-March stating its interest in exploring the space and selling original DC digital art through NFTs.
The NFT release by Marvel comes in at just the right time, when GameFi is catching on and gamers are getting into the blockchain space in a big way. Issuing digital collectibles of legendary superheroes from a big name like Marvel lends further credibility to the space and can help usher in an era of mainstream adoption of this technology going forward.
