China’s Ministry of Commerce warned nations not to sign trade agreements with the United States that might jeopardize China’s interests amid rumors that the Trump administration plans to provide tariff relief in exchange for trade restrictions with Beijing.
The ministry stated on Monday that “China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China’s interests” and threatened to take resolute countermeasures in retaliation.
China also underlined that it is willing to cooperate with others in order to resist obstacles and oppose bullying that occurs on its own.
The ministry’s announcement coincides with calls from dozens of nations for US trade tariff exemptions or reductions. The Trump administration temporarily removed trade tariffs for all countries for ninety days, except for China, which responded with its retaliatory tariffs.
Tariffs on Chinese imports have increased to 145 percent, and Beijing has retaliated with 125 percent levies on American good following a series of US actions. Recently, China declared that it has no intention of raising its general tariff rates any further.
China’s commerce ministry reaffirmed its commitment to fortifying partnerships to strengthen its trade network, especially with Southeast Asia and Europe.
The ministry believes that protectionism and unilateralism are worldwide issues no nation can overlook.
