The United States Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, announced that Michael Faulkender, the Deputy Treasury Secretary, has been appointed the acting Internal Revenue Service (IRS) commissioner, succeeding Gary Shapley in the interim position.

Bessent expressed confidence in Faulkender’s capabilities, stating, “restoring trust within the IRS, and I am assured that Treasury DepSec Michael Faulkender is the appropriate individual for this task.”

Shapley, who appeared as a whistleblower before Congress regarding the agency’s investigation into Hunter Biden’s taxes, served in the role for less than three days.

The Senate’s confirmation of President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the IRS, former U.S. Representative Billy Long of Missouri, was expected to lead to Shapley’s departure.

The New York Times, which initially reported the decision, cited anonymous sources familiar with the matter stating that Bessent had requested the change because Shapley was appointed to the post on Tuesday without prior knowledge or consent, at the behest of billionaire Elon Musk.

Bessent’s post noted that Shapley would continue his year-long reform investigation alongside Joseph Ziegler, another IRS agent who alleged political interference in the Hunter Biden probe.

Bessent acknowledged Shapley’s crucial role in the ongoing efforts to reform the IRS, stating that “Gary Shapley’s dedication and insight in devising lasting and impactful reforms within the IRS is indispensable to our mission, and he remains one of my most valuable senior advisors at the U.S. Treasury as we collaborate to reimagine and restructure the IRS.”
