The U.S. Treasury Secretary Praised Javier Milei’s Economic Plan

The visit comes on the heels of Argentina’s recent agreement with the IMF, as well as new financial support from the World Bank.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met on Monday with Argentine President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo.

Bessent arrived in the country accompanied by Rod Citrone, a longtime friend and founder of Discovery Capital Management.

During the meeting, Bessent praised the progress of Milei’s economic plan, particularly following the lifting of currency controls and Argentina’s renewed agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He also highlighted ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement amid the global tariff tensions sparked by former President Donald Trump. His visit is being viewed as a strong show of support for Milei’s administration.

According to a statement released by the U.S. Treasury, Bessent “reaffirmed the full support of the United States for President Milei’s bold economic reforms” and commended the government’s swift action in reducing barriers to reciprocal trade with the U.S. He also congratulated the President on Argentina’s “recent and successful” negotiations with the IMF.

The statement further noted that Bessent expressed confidence in Milei’s ability to maintain Argentina’s positive economic momentum, and said the country “can achieve a bright future for its people through economic policies that provide stability and growth for both workers and the dynamic private sector.”

In addition to the meeting with the President, Bessent also held talks with Minister Caputo and other members of the economic team. Milei and Bessent later recorded a joint statement.

Scott Bessent’s Delegation

Bessent was joined by Matt Schlapp, Chairman of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), and Soledad Cedro, CEO of CPAC Argentina. Also in the delegation was Rod Citrone, a prominent U.S. businessman, founder of Discovery Capital Management, and co-owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The visit comes on the heels of Argentina’s recent agreement with the IMF, as well as new financial support from the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
