U.S. Congressman Pushes $15B Aid for Argentina

The request by Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar underscores Argentina’s growing importance in Washington’s agenda, highlighting the need for key financial support to stabilize its economy and promote a free-market model in the region.

The Republican congresswoman formally urged U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to leverage his influence at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to secure a significant financial assistance package for Argentina.

In a recently sent letter, Salazar stressed the need for an agreement of at least $20 billion, with an initial disbursement of $15 billion, to stabilize Argentina’s economy at a critical juncture.

Salazar emphasized Argentina’s strategic importance as a key U.S. ally in the Western Hemisphere and praised President Javier Milei’s economic reform efforts following years of crisis. “Argentines are fighting to emerge from the lethargy induced by socialism,” she wrote, arguing that the country needs support to overcome inflation, fiscal deficits, and economic deterioration.

Argentina as a Model for Latin America

In her letter, Salazar highlighted that a successful bailout of Argentina would not only benefit the country but also serve as an example for the entire Latin American region. “The region desperately needs a model to follow, and Argentina can become the moral and political reference that shows its neighbors the path to prosperity,” she stated.

The congresswoman also linked Argentina’s recovery to an ideological victory over socialism, which she called “the killer of economies.” Drawing from her Cuban-American background, she compared Argentina’s economic struggles to those of Cuba, arguing that open-market policies are the only viable path to development.

U.S. Role in IMF Negotiations

The letter represents an effort to pressure the U.S. Treasury Department to take a more active role in negotiating a new IMF assistance program for Argentina. As the IMF’s largest shareholder, Washington’s backing is crucial for the approval of any financial package.
