Ethereum Postpones Pectra Upgrade to Launch Third Testnet ‘Hoodi’
Ethereum‘s core developers have announced a delay in the Pectra upgrade, opting to introduce a third testnet, ‘Hoodi’, to ensure a seamless mainnet deployment. This decision follows challenges encountered in previous testnets, underscoring the commitment to network stability and performance.
The Hoodi testnet is scheduled to launch on March 17, with the Pectra upgrade activation planned for March 26. This strategic move aims to address issues identified in earlier testnets, providing a controlled environment to validate the upgrade’s robustness.
Pectra combines elements from the Prague and Electra proposals, introducing over 10 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) designed to enhance wallet functionality and user experience. A notable feature is the scaling proposal to increase the blob count for data availability from three to six, aiming to improve network capacity and efficiency.
The initial testnets, Holesky and Sepolia, encountered synchronization bugs and client readiness issues, prompting the need for an additional testnet. Notably, the Sepolia testnet, which integrated Pectra on March 5, experienced errors such as empty blocks being mined, highlighting the necessity for further testing.
If the Hoodi testnet operates without significant issues, developers may schedule the mainnet launch of Pectra approximately 30 days post-activation, potentially as early as April 25. This timeline reflects a cautious approach to ensure the upgrade’s reliability.
