Milei Seeks Comeback with U.S. Visit, Meets Musk and Trump

Argentine President Javier Milei arrived in Washington on Thursday, hoping his overseas trip and packed agenda will help him shift focus away from the $LIBRA cryptocurrency scandal.

Accompanied by his sister and General Secretary Karina Milei, along with his Economy Minister and presidential spokesperson, Milei was later joined in the U.S. capital by Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein. At the last minute, Santiago Caputo, the president’s advisor and a key figure in the so-called crypto-gate, was also added to the delegation.

Planned weeks in advance, the visit comes at a crucial time, offering Milei the opportunity to highlight his economic achievements while strengthening ties with key allies.

Meeting with Musk and CPAC Appearance

At around 5:00 PM local time, Milei met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk in Maryland, bringing him a chainsaw as a gift—a symbol of the drastic spending cuts his administration has implemented. Musk, known for his outspoken views, played along, posing for photos with the gift.

Milei later posted a video of the encounter on X, writing, “The chainsaw has arrived at DOGE, referencing Musk’s affinity for Dogecoin.

Following their private meeting, the two appeared together at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where Milei again showcased the symbol of his austerity measures.

IMF Talks and Economic Strategy

Later, Milei met with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to discuss securing an additional $10 billion to boost Central Bank reserves and lift foreign exchange restrictions.

This marks the second meeting between Milei and Georgieva in 30 days, focusing on the ongoing 23rd round of negotiations between Argentina and the IMF. Despite pressure to devalue the peso, Milei’s administration remains committed to controlling depreciation rates to curb inflation, a key policy success so far.

What’s Next?

On Friday, Milei is set to speak at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) before meeting World Bank President Ajay Banga, who is expected to visit Argentina in late March.

On Saturday, he will return to CPAC, where he may discuss Trump’s recent tariff threats with the former U.S. president.
